highlighting photography from the 1990’s in charleston, s.c.

Fine art photograph photographer, David Edwards, is featuring his work from the 1990’s. The work will be on display the month of April, 2025, at Corrigan Gallery, with an opening reception on April 4th, 5-8pm, at Corrigan Gallery, 38 Queen Street.

The show features Edwards’ photography and celebrated the release of his book entitled “Charleston: Walking with Ghosts.” His book documents the historic and artistic roots of Charleston in the 1990’s with an evocative view of this era. Edwards collaborated with Marcus Amaker and A$iahMae and featured their poetry in the book. Amaker served as the poet laureate of Charleston from 2016 to 2022, and A$iahMae from 2023 to present.

This group of photographs tells the story of inclusivity with an emerging bohemian arts scene. The work documents a working-class citizenry living on the peninsula, the beauty of crumbling architecture, and the multitude of faces encountered along the way. This book honors a city that was rich in history and culture but had not been discovered or heralded as “the best” place to visit. The city was for its citizens and had not seen the effects of the developers and tourism.

“When I moved here, I fell in love with Charleston, and I wanted to immortalize the soul of the city. I like to think I show our common humanity in a more innocent time, pre-cellphone, pre-social media. This work ultimately reflects a love for Charleston and an obsessive love of camerawork.” A variety of films, processes, and techniques were used in this project that spanned over a decade.
